The death road is perfect for those who loves bicycles and adrenaline. On the other hand you must be also responsible not to dare many maneuvers and risk your life in the edge of the road.
If you decided you are doing it, you can book directly from your accommodation or a tourist agency in La Paz, I did with El Solario. Prices ranges between 300 and 450 BOB (40 to 65 USD) according to the type of bicycle you choose. This price includes transport to the summit and back to your accommodation, food, bicycles, pictures, protection clothes and helmet.
We started by 7AM, a van picked us up in La Paz and drove one hour to La Cumbre that sits at 4600m. The bicycles were great, all with suspension system and disk breaks. From the summit we cycled for 5 hours down to the city of Coroico at 1200m high. The beginning of the trip was mostly sealed road, very steep and cold because of the altitude. As soon as we reached Unduavi at 3500m high we started to take off our coats and jackets. At this city the unsealed road starts and it get a bit more dangerous.
We did a few stops on the way to rest, eat and take pictures. The landscape is great and scary because the road is really tight sometimes. In San Juan a few small water falls on the road made us wet. The road is pretty dangerous if you are not that cautious, I almost felt from the bike twice.
After 5 hours we reached the city of Yolosa at 1180 meters and a comfortable temperatura of 28 degrees. The adventure finished in this place where our van was waiting to pick us up and drive us 30 minutes to Coroico. Over there we had 2 hours to have lunch, relax and enjoy a swimming pool, all included in the package.
In the end we also took a great group picture. By 4PM we returned to La Paz arriving by night 4 hours after. The experience was unforgettable but if you have altitude sickness it is better to stay at home!
In the end the most important thing is: I went down the death road and I’m still alive!
