Day trip to Gibraltar

I was in the city of Tarifa in the south of Spain and I decided to visit Gibraltar, a territory that is from the United Kingdom. This territory that has its own flag and currency, is about an hour from Tarifa. The ticket costs only 5 euros. I went without any expectations because they told me that there was only a tax haven for shopping, but on arrival I was delighted with the place. Gibraltar is a small peninsula with beaches, marinas and plenty of cargo ships that cross the famous Strait of Gibraltar. The country is also known for its dutty free shops and for the monkeys, which are tourist attraction aside.

I had a day to explore this region so i focused on visiting the lookout of the city located in a hill that has a cable car where for 14 EUR return you can reach the top in 6 minutes.

The view on the top was stunning and monkeys could be sighted all over the place. From the top we could see marinas, beautiful beaches and a few cargo ships crossing the Gibraltar Strait, important connection between the Atlantic ocean and the Mediterranean. gibraltar lookout

As soon as I arrived I saw a gorgeous monkey in the floor and tried to take a picture with him, but it quickly jumped on my back and tried to open my backpack looking for food. I suddenly jumped and he fell of my back.

The local security told me to stay away from the animals and reported that they are dangerous, capable of biting and making strong scratches that could ruin any trip. After that I was a little more attentive. A few more meters and I come across a whole family. A monkey baby and his grumpy parents, in the background a wonderful view of a beach.

After descending from the glimmering lookout, I walked a little along the main avenue of the city and sent a postcard through the royal mailbox.

On the way back I had the opportunity to see the main street that allow access to Gibraltar being closed for a plane take off. It is knowns as the World’s Only Airport Runway Intersecting a Road.

As I did not have more buses for the time I needed so I ended up getting back by taxi and paying 25 euros, but it was worth the visit. The landscapes of the road trip were great and I would definitely recommend a visit to the country, especially if you are visiting southern Spain.
