Kocherlnball festival in Munich

It is 6AM of July 20 2014 and lots of people are arriving in the Biergarten of Chinesische Turm, an important touristic attraction in Munich. Most of the visitors are dressing the traditional german clothes, “lederhosen” for men and “Dirndl” for women. You must be asking me know, is it really 6AM? Yes! I did not wrote it wrong, one Sunday per year this place is a stage for a tradicional festival called “Kocherlball” or “Cooks’ Ball” in English.

In the 19 century (1880) every Sunday from 5 to 8AM in the summer many workers including cookers, maids, deliveryman, nannies and other employees were meeting in this place to dance and drink. They could only met at this time of the day because of the work shifts. In 1904, this event was suspended by authority with and argument of lack of morality.

In 1989, together with Bicentennial Celebrations of the English Garden, the Kocherlball happened for the first time and became a great tradition in Munich.
