Going off the beaten path while traveling can provide you great surprises. With this mindset I found a community of backpackers and a super great creative place in the east coast of South Korea. Re-Do Backpackers is an eco-friendly hostel mostly built with recycling material and donation supplies, located in the city of Jumunjin. The city is an eup in northeastern Gangneung City and the population numbers about 20,600, or about 7,000 households. Roughly 10% of these are involved in fisheries and agriculture, respectively.
Behind the idea is Damian, a traveler it self that decided to live on the beach and is creating a community of travelers with inspiring ideas.
The place is a paradise for digital nomads. Beside the entire structure of the venue, a rooftop area and a pub, built in a sustainable way, Jumunjin city has a few attractions to offer.
Starting from an interesting fishing harbor with a market, white sand beaches, water sports such as scuba diving, kayaking, surfing and boating. On top of all, there is a huge nation park not far from there.
I spent 2 weeks soaking the life in this village and I can see a huge potential of a big creative community of backpackers. Activities that I did while staying in Re-Do Backpackers included: farming, recycling goods, participating in local events, attending a tourism seminar and doing cultural trips.
