Is is indeed possible to swim with penguins near Capetown in Boulders Beach and I did it. To get there you must take an hour train to Simon’s Town which costs approximately 10 rand (1USD) and get off at the final station. The train goes by the coast and the view is spectacular.
When you get there, you have the option to take a van to the park where the penguins are or go on foot for about half an hour. I went on foot and had the pleasure of dazzling the city and its old buildings. I followed the signs until finally arriving at the Table Mountain National Park where the Boulders beach is located, a natural habitat of the African Penguins.
There are two entrances, the main one, which gives access to a lookout in front of the beach where they live and a second entrance that allows you to enter the water and be very close to them. I went in the second entrance and stayed about 2 meters from the Penguins in their natural habitat.
I also saw some swimming in the water very close to sunbathers. The water is not icy and it is very pleasant to enter.
After this close contact, I went to see another entrance that has several informative panels explaining the life of these animals. Along the way I came across several very funny penguins, including one with an open beak and another digging a hole in the sand.
At the end of the panels I find a crowded beach. If you are in Cape Town, you can not miss Simon’s Town and understand a little more about the lives of these beautiful animals!
