The city of Porto in Portugal is well know for the famous fortified wines made with a mix of spirits with wine creating a sweet and strong flavor and a high alcoholic rate. There are plenty of wine warehouses in the wharf area on the other side of the bridge Dom Luis I direction to Gaia Pier. Most of the wineries are located in Diogo Leite avenue.
I tried to visit Sandtom, the most famous one but the tickets were sold out. I went to CÁLEM, a brand that exists since 1859. The guided tours happen every 30 minutes daily between 10AM and 6:30PM and a session leasts one hour. They cost only 5 euros, allowing two free degustations and are available in English, Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, German, Russian and Japanese.
The visit starts in a room where you got to learn the history of the winery. After that we got to see the huge barrels that store Porto wine.
We got to a corridor with plenty of barrels and learn a bit of knowledge in behalf of the production process.
The last step of the visit is the degustation. We try different flavors and if interested can adquire a bottle just beside this room, in the main store.
Worth the visit!
